Making it in Melbourne podcast

A while ago I planned to interview a bunch of companies in Melbourne about the challenges and opportunities of starting a business in Melbourne. From my experience living in Melbourne for 15 years, there were some things that made it easier, like the city’s strong multicultural networks and supportive local council programs, and some that made it harder, such as accessing international markets and investors, being a relatively isolated city globally.
That’s why I was pleased to discover the City of Melbourne’s Making it in Melbourne podcast series, which tells the stories I wanted to hear.

Produced by the City of Melbourne with technical and research assistance from RMIT School of Media and Communication, the podcast features inspiring conversations with migrant entrepreneurs who are transforming our city’s business landscape. Did you know that 1 in 3 small businesses in Australia are owned by migrants? Or that migrants are twice as likely to become entrepreneurs? Despite this, their stories often go untold.
The podcast aims to change this by showcasing how these founders’ cultural backgrounds shaped their entrepreneurial journeys. Over two seasons, episodes cover startups across mental health (Michelle Chen’s Mental Jam), recruitment tech (Nick La’s WePloy), VR training (Sri Venkatesan’s Next XR Group), and more. Each founder shares insights, lessons, and tips for aspiring entrepreneurs.
Season 2 of Making it in Melbourne podcast has officially launched, featuring new insightful stories from migrant entrepreneurs on the challenges and successes behind building a business in Melbourne. From finding clients in unconventional spaces to stepping out of comfort zones. For anyone launching a business in Melbourne, or simply curious about the hidden engine of our startup ecosystem, this is essential listening. Available wherever you get your podcasts.
